Dictionary Merriam Webster

Merriam-Webster
The online version of the Merriam-Webster dictionary is not specifically designed for learners of English.  However, it is still a really valuable resource. It has a number of features that users will find useful:
  • a simple definition
  • time traveller (shows words that were first used in the same year as the search term - hurricane is first  recorded in 1555 as are canoe and horizontal)
  • a full definition
  • an example sentence
  • a link to the English language learners' version of the dictionary
  • a link to a dictionary for 'kids'
  • an audio file pronouncing the word (US English)
  • recent examples of the word being used on the internet
  • synonyms
  • origins and etymology
  • games and quizzes
  • videos about words

The site has a number of advertisements on every page and sometimes directs users to a free trial (a pay site in effect) if the word is said to only be available in the unabridged version.
