Mapping words to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

The Word Family Framework

The Word Family Framework (WFF) is another vocabulary list. It is different to other word lists in that it places approximately 22,000 words across the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It shows how words within the same family are placed at different levels within the CEFR. It is designed primarily to be used by teachers who are planning vocabulary related class work, courses, and syllabuses.

Users can search online or download the complete list as a pdf. The pictue below shows the entry for the word value taken from the pdf. It shows the headword and then details how words in the family are placed across the CEFR from A1 to C2.  The X column is for extra words in the family that are considered to be off the scale or for words which have not as yet been accurately placed within the scale. I am not sure exactly what is meant by off the scale. Someone has kindly posted the suggestion that it means beyond the C2 scale.

The online search tool is shown below.  Users enter the word they wish to research and select one of the CEFR levels or the all button.  The results are similar to the pdf results but the level selected is coloured brightly and the areas not selected are shaded out in grey

  1. 'off the scale' = off/beyond the CEFR A1-C2 scale.
