Xerte is the name of a suite of authoring tools from the University of Nottingham. It is a free open source download and is one of the best tools for creating online learning activities.

It is possible to create a range of activities for learners such as gap-fills, multiple choice quizzes, label the picture and audio and video exercises.

In design it is fresher and crisper than Hot Potatoes and is a must have for teachers who are interested in making their own activities but who don't want to spend money.

Xerte is highly recommended although it is not necessarily the easiest tool in the box to use.  However, the more you use it the easier it gets.
